Kerr Street Mission relies on volunteers to help our programs run smoothly. If you are interested in a volunteer role, please take a look at the positions available below.
Application Process
Our organization carefully selects its volunteers, and not everyone who applies will be accepted.
KSM takes its responsibilities with respect to our clients seriously, and screens volunteer applicants thoroughly. Our screening process includes a preliminary interview followed by reference checks for successful candidates. A current (within 90 days) Vulnerable Sector Check is also required from successful candidates aged 18+ before they begin volunteering.
PLEASE NOTE: The application and placement process may take 4-6 weeks to complete.

Warehouse (Market Operations) Volunteer
Help us receive food donations, restock our shelves and fridges and rotate our inventory. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who can lift up to 50 lbs with ease.
Requested commitment: Weekly shifts.

Position: Warehouse (Market Operations) Volunteer
Supervisor(s): Food Services Manager, Warehouse & Logistics Coordinator
Objective: To ensure that the KSM Food Market and Warehouse are set up, organized, and prepared to be able to effectively support clients, community members, and other volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Support with stocking the KSM Food Market by loading in fresh food products, and bringing
additional inventory from food storage locations. - Help to load and unload deliveries, putting items away in designated locations.
- Engage with food donors ensuring they are appreciated, weigh donations, and input the
donations into the tracking system accurately. - Shuffle inventory in storage locations as needed to maintain a steady flow of product following a
first-in-first-out process. - Organize food in refrigeration units and ensure that the unit temperatures are maintained.
- Keep the KSM warehouse and work areas clean and organized according to warehouse
processes. Take out recycling and other clutter as needed. - Maintain a courteous and professional manner with staff and other volunteers
- Occasionally accompany KSM staff to go offsite and help with additional loading and receiving tasks.

URGENT NEED!
Delivery and Warehouse Volunteer
Provide support to our delivery & warehouse teams by dismantling delivery packing stations once packing is complete, ensuring parcels are properly organized for delivery and help drivers load their vehicles. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who are able to lift up to 50lbs.
Shifts are weekly on Wednesdays 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
Position: Delivery & Warehouse Support Volunteer
Supervisor(s): Warehouse & Logistics Coordinator, Process & Administration Coordinator
Objective: To ensure that the KSM Food Market and Delivery Packing Area are cleaned, organized, and prepared to be able to effectively support clients, community members, and other volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Gather and return all delivery packing supplies to their designated location.
- Ensure that the delivery packing area is torn down and cleaned.
- Transition the dining room from delivery set-up to market seating as directed by staff.
- Check delivery route lists against packed bags to ensure that drivers have all their allotted packages
- Answer delivery drivers’ questions.
- Help volunteer drivers with transporting delivery packages to their vehicles.
- Assist with packing deliveries as needed.

URGENT NEED!
Market (Food Bank) Liaison Volunteer
Work closely with staff and food bank volunteers to ensure the food bank is set up and ready for clients, troubleshoot and solve problems, provide feedback to staff and jump in and help if there is a shortage of Market volunteers. Suitable for volunteers aged 18+ with excellent leadership and problem solving ability, and who relate well to others.

Position: Food Market Liaison Volunteer
Supervisor(s): Food Services Operations Coordinator
Objective: Direct and liaise between the staff and volunteer group. Ensure the volunteers on your shift are abiding by KSM’s outlined duties and that all tasks are completed as outlined. Be available to provide support as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Regularly check for email communications from KSM staff and connect with your supervisor to confirm all updates are understood.
- Arrive to the shift one hour prior to Market to review any special instructions left by staff, ensure the Market and the dining hall are prepared for service, and that all volunteers on your shift understand what is required.
- Ensure that the Market is ready to go (check-in desk is set up, produce is out, hallway is clear, volunteers have walkies, etc.)
- Communicate directly with the Market lead to pass on information and updates from the staff and take the time to ensure a thorough understanding.
- Support in training new Market volunteers on all market roles
- Triage volunteer or client questions/situations and ensure that the situation is sorted out, if you need assistance, please call your KSM supervisor.
- Respond to Market calls on the walkie and assist as needed.
- Provide your supervisor with any issues/feedback/suggestions as needed.
- Manage the rotation of volunteers between Market roles each week.
- Assist in filling/covering vacant shifts should your volunteers be unavailable on any given day.
- Stay 30 minutes after your shift to connect with your supervisor, ensure that the closing duties are completed as outlined in KSM’s documents and connect with staff.

Holiday Season Warehouse Volunteer – Donation Receiving
November & December
Seeking volunteers who can warmly greet donors and receive donations, helping to unload cars and process donations according to KSM guidelines. Suitable for mature volunteers 16+ who can represent KSM positively and responsibly with our community of donors. Ability to lift 20-30 pounds is required.
Multiple shifts to choose from:
- Monday 9:00 am – 11:30 am, 11:30 am – 2:00 pm, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm,
- Thursday 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
- Friday 9:00 am – 11:30 am, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Position: Holiday Season Warehouse Volunteer – Donation Receiving
Supervisor: Food Services Operations Coordinator
Objective: To receive food and other physical donations.
Responsibilities:
- Accept donations at our Kerr Street site and our offsite sorting location (on Cross Avenue).
- Warmly greet donors and thank them for bringing donations.
- Help to unload vehicles and bring donations into KSM.
- Weigh donations and compete the donation form.
- Keep the donations tidy for transport, loading the KSM van as necessary.
- Maintain a courteous and professional manner with staff, donors and other volunteers.
Requirements:
- Must be 16+
- Ability to lift large quantities of canned goods

Holiday Season On Call Driver
Flexible timing November & December
If you are looking for a way to help out this holiday season, have a flexible schedule during the day and your own vehicle, consider joining our roster as an On Call Driver. You will help KSM collect donations from local donor organizations and transport them bac to our location, at times that work with your schedule. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who can lift 20-30 pounds.

Objective: To pick up food donations from donors and transport to KSM.
Responsibilities:
- Drive to off-site locations such as local schools or churches to collect non-perishable donations and return them to KSM.
- Unload donations at KSM into the appropriate area.
- Warmly greet donors and thank them for their donations.
- Maintain a courteous and professional manner with staff, donors and other volunteers.

Holiday Season – Food Services Organizer

Seeking a volunteer to help us keep our food inventory organized and orderly over the holiday season. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who have a knack for organization, have 1-2 hours to spare each week and can lift 20-30 pounds.

Objective: Keep Food Services locations (sorting centre, fridges and freezers tidy & organized).
Responsibilities:
- On a weekly basis:
- Visit the KSM Sorting Centre to ensure donations and sorted food stacks are in the correct locations, moving items as necessary.
- Review KSM fridges and freezers to ensure food is organized and tidy, moving items as necessary.
- Correspond closely with staff to ensure items are being organized according to KSM guidelines

Holiday Season – Sorting Center Shift Leader

Seeking volunteers to represent KSM and lead groups of sorting volunteers on our behalf during the busy holiday season. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who have excellent leadership ability and great people skills. Ability to lift 20-30 pounds is required.
- Shift timing is flexible on an as-needed basis, or commit to a weekly date/time that works for you
Position: Holiday Season – Sorting Center Shift Leader
Supervisor: Food Services Operations Coordinator
Objective: To supervise and provide guidance to volunteer groups who visit KSM to sort food donations.
Responsibilities:
- Attend training on sorting lead responsibilities
- Arrive at the sorting centre early and warmly greet volunteer groups
- Provide instructions and guidance to the group for the duration of the sorting shift.
- Keyholder responsibilities – obtain key from KSM, unlock sorting centre and return key/lock sorting centre at completion of the shift.
- Ensure the sorting centre is tidy at the end of the shift and that garbage is properly disposed of.
- Report any concerns/feedback to the Food Services Operations Coordinator.
- Escalate any concerns to KSM staff during the shift
- Maintain a courteous and professional manner with staff, donors and other volunteers.

Child and Youth Volunteers
URGENT NEED!
Tutor (Elementary English or Math)
Do you have a passion for teaching children? Are you strong in English or Math? Consider becoming a KSM tutor for elementary aged children. Seeking volunteers who can commit 1-2 hours each week to help students with homework or guide them through a academic workbook. Each tutoring shift is 30 minutes long and we are seeking volunteers who can commit to the same time week so that they can work with the same student over time. Suitable for adult volunteers with a teaching background or passion for tutoring, or mature high school students with strong academics and experience working with children.
- Shifts are weekly, for 1-2 hours on Tuesdays between 3pm-6pm
(Seeking volunteers who can commit for the school year – to end of June)
Position: Tutor (Elementary English or Math)
Supervisor: Kids’ Clubs Co-ordinator
Objective: To help support literacy by spending one on one reading time with children in the KSM After School program.
Responsibilities:
- Academically develop and guide students in a one on one, in-person setting with a focus on elementary level math and English tutoring curriculum. Each session is 30 minutes in length
- Assist children with homework or walk them through a grade levelled workbook in the subject of study
- Ideally volunteers will commit to the same timeframe each week in order to work with the same student/s, building a relationship of trust and consistency in their learning and development
- Engage with children in a positive, respectful and encouraging manner
- Communicate openly with KSM staff about any concerns and the progress of the child

- Adults with educational background or passion for teaching

Child and Youth – Snack Volunteer
Seeking volunteers 18+ to help us prepare and serve snacks to the children and youth in our programs, on a weekly basis. Suitable for individuals who are experienced and comfortable working in a kitchen and interacting with children.

Seeking a volunteer aged 18+ to help with the preparation, serving and cleanup of snack for our Kids Club program. KSM organizes the menu and ingredients for the snack and you would work with another volunteer to prep, serve and cleanup.
Requested commitment: Weekly shifts to end of June (excluding PA days and school holidays)

Kids Club Activity Leader (Reading & Running Program)
We are looking for an volunteer aged 18+ who enjoys working with children between the ages of 5 and 10. Volunteers will help us implement and deliver our Reading and Running Program, supporting the leaders in the delivery of a detailed curriculum.
- Weekly Wednesdays from 3:15 – 6:00 pm (April 3 to June 23 inclusive)
Position: Kids Club Activity Leader (Reading & Running Program)
Supervisor(s): Kids Club Coordinator
Objective: Support the delivery of the Reading and Running Program and interact with children in a positive and affirming way.
Responsibilities:
- Help with the implementation and delivery of programming including reading and games.
- Follow the detailed curriculum that includes a detailed breakdown of daily activities including games, activities, icebreakers, reading activities, and time fillers.
- Assist children with activities as required.
- Help supervise children participating in the program and support the management of behaviour following KSM guidelines.
- Direct questions and issues to the children’s programming coordinator who will be onsite .
Requirements:
- Must be 18+
- Experience working with children is an asset
- Ability to lead, control, and supervise a group of 15 children ages 5-7 and 8-10
- An inclination toward sports and games is an asset but not required
- Prior experience in children’s programming focused on reading/literacy is an asset but not required

Kids' Club Walking Buddy
Help us safely walk a small number of children from a nearby school to our KSM location. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who are responsible and enjoy children.
Requested commitment: One shift per week for school year (mid September to end of June) excluding elementary school holidays

Position: Kids’ Clubs Walking Buddy Volunteer
Supervisor(s): Children’s Development Program Coordinator
Objective: To help pick up a small number of children from local Public School and safely walk them to KSM each program day.
Responsibilities
- Check in at KSM before shift start and walk to the school with a fellow volunteer or staff member
- Meet children outside of local public school
- Walk with the children to KSM and ensure road safety
- Ensure that each child safely travels from the school to KSM
- Maintain order and safety en route
- Positively interact with and build positive relationships with children
- Help supervise children during snack period once at KSM (optional)
Requirements:

Community Meals - Meal Group Liaison
KSM is able to provide meals to our clients & community through the generosity of our volunteer meal groups. Assist KSM by warmly greeting volunteer meal groups and providing guidance as they prepare and serve meals. The role also includes the management/support of setup and clean-up etc. This role is suitable for volunteers 18+ who enjoy working with people and can provide leadership in a respectful and congenial manner.

Position: Community Meals – Meal Group Liaison
Supervisor: Family Services Manager
Objective: To provide guidance to volunteer groups that prepare community meals, ensuring they have a positive experience while delivering a meal that is prepared in accordance with KSM’s food handling practices.
Responsibilities:
- Warmly greet volunteer groups upon your arrival
- Ensure that required supplies are available
- Ensure tables and chairs are set up, and tables are set with cutlery and napkins in advance of meal time
- Prepare coffee and tea and set up the beverage station
- Assist with client check-in as needed
- Ensure groups are following safe food handling practices (use of hairnets, gloves) and adhering to KSM’s Meal guidelines
- Provide oversight to teams throughout the community meal process to ensure teams stay on track, delegating tasks to meal group members if necessary to help them along
- Be available for questions from the meal group and troubleshoot issues, providing assistance as needed
- Identify and try to resolve client and/or logistical issues and escalate to the onsite KSM staff member as needed
- Supervise the cleanup process ensuring the items on the KSM Kitchen Checklist are completed,
and ensuring the kitchen and dining hall are left in a clean state - Discuss suitability of leftover food with KSM staff and package or discard, as required
- Ensure kitchen waste bins are emptied and cleared to the appropriate compost, trash or recycling bin located outside of the building
Requirements:

- Previous kitchen experience is an asset
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to delegate, lead others and provide direction in a respectful manner

Community Meals - Meal Group Liaison - Floater Volunteer
(1-2 positions available)
We are seeking a Meal Group Liaison to help cover shift absences/vacation on an as needed basis. This role involves welcoming our volunteer meal groups and ensuring they are set up to successfully prepare meals in our kitchen. This volunteer will be a go-to person for groups in terms of questions and providing guidance. This volunteer will also ensure the dining hall tables and chairs are set up and put away, and will prepare coffee and tea. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who are patient and able to lead others with respect.
- Evening shifts may include Monday, Wednesday 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
- Weekend shifts may include Saturday 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Community Delivery Administrative Volunteer
Help us organize our weekly deliveries by compiling lists of clients and creating route maps for our volunteer drivers. Suitable for volunteers 18+ who have experience with MS Excel and Google Maps, and who have excellent attention to detail.
Requested commitment: Weekly shifts

Position: Community Delivery Administrative Volunteer
Supervisor(s): Market and Delivery Operation Coordinator
Objective: Prepare documentation and driver routes to ensure a successful delivery day.
Responsibilities:
- On a weekly basis, compile lists of clients who require deliveries, using Microsoft Excel
- Accurately manage lists of clients and print address labels for delivery packages
- Use Google maps software to prepare delivery routes for our volunteer drivers
- Occasionally make phone calls to clients to confirm details
Requirements:
- Must be 18+
- Reliability and punctuality
- Exceptional level of attention to detail
- Ability to compile information and complete tasks within a tight timeline
- Experience with basic MS Excel software and Google products
- A Vulnerable Sector Check is required
- Experience with basic Excel and Google Suite products an asset

URGENT NEED!
Community Delivery Volunteer Driver
Looking for volunteers who can join us on a weekly basis to deliver food parcels to clients who cannot attend the food bank in person. Using your own vehicle, deliver parcels to approximately 8 residences in the Oakville area each week. Lifting and carrying parcels up to 20 lbs is required.
Requested commitment: Weekly shifts
- Wednesdays for 1 hour between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm
Position: Community Delivery Volunteer Driver
Supervisor(s): Community Delivery Coordinator
Objective: To deliver food parcels to clients who are unable to come to Kerr Street Mission in person due to health, mobility or other reasons.
Responsibilities:
- Once a week, deliver food parcels according to a prescribed route within the Oakville area
(approximately 5-8 dropoffs per shift) - Arrive at KSM at the scheduled time to pick up food parcels and load car
- Follow route to clients addresses, following the dropoff instructions on the list provided
- If contact cannot be made, return the food parcels to KSM
- Contact the Community Delivery Coordinator if any issues arise along the route and also to confirm deliveries have been made
- Shred documents containing client information once deliveries are complete
- Represent KSM in a positive and caring way with our clients and in the community

Meal Preparation Volunteer – Prenatal Education Program
KSM is hosting prenatal education programs for expectant parents in our community. We are running three sessions, each of which is 6 weeks in duration. We are looking for a volunteer to come to KSM and prepare a nutritious lunch for each of the sessions. Recipes and ingredients will be provided by KSM. This role is suitable for volunteers who are 18+, enjoy cooking and serving, and can commit to attend weekly for one (or more) of the six week sessions.

Supervisor: Front Office Supervisor
Objective: To receive and direct all personnel who come in contact via phone or in person with KSM.
Responsibilities:
- Warmly greet guests and clients; ensure all visitors, volunteers, and service personnel sign in
- Answer and direct calls, take messages and respond to inquiries
- Provide registration information for all new or prospective clients
- Receive payments and donations, complete receipt paperwork forms
- Briefly assess visitor needs in person and over the phone, determine if/ how KSM can help
- Familiarize yourself with Halton Region and Oakville community and social services, referring clients, community members, or donors to other organizations when applicable
Requirements:
- Must be 18+
- Strong communication skills, professionalism, organizational abilities
- Compassionate, empathetic, and respectful demeanour
- Ability to think calmly under pressure and respond graciously in stressful or emotional situations
- Compliance with mission and vision of Kerr Street Community Services
Commitment: Minimum 3 month commitment; must be present and on time for hours of relief coverage.

Deep Cleaning Volunteer
Help us perform a deep cleaning of our food bank, warehouse and kitchen on a monthly basis. Suitable for volunteers 16+ who can make an ongoing commitment.
- One Saturday each month from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Position: Site Deep Clean Volunteer
Supervisor: Kitchen & Warehouse Operations Coordinator
Objective: Assist in a monthly deep clean of KSM Kitchen, Market, & Warehouse.
Responsibilities:
- Work alongside a team of volunteers to complete basic cleaning and organization of the outlined work areas
- Follow the instructions of the Kitchen & Warehouse Operations Coordinator to effectively clean and sanitize as per instruction
Requirements:
- Must be 16+
- Must be reliable and punctual
- Ability to stand and/or crouch
- Ability to follow instruction
- Comfortability working with cleaning products and following safety protocols
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- A Vulnerable Sector Check (police check) is required
Commitment: Monthly commitment of 3 hours on the third Saturday of each month
Training: KSM Policy & Procedure Training; Orientation; Support from staff.
Van Detailing
We are looking for a volunteer, or pair of volunteers to do a deep cleaning on our KSM van onsite. Hours are flexible and we can provide supplies. Experience cleaning cars and attention to detail is preferred. Open to volunteers 16+. Email volunteer@kerrstreet.com if you are interested.

Market Greeter & Screener
Greet incoming clients and perform health screening to maintain a safe environment at KSM. Open to volunteers 18+.

Position: Market Greeter & Screener
Time: Various
Supervisor(s): Food Services Team
Objective: To greet and screen clients coming to KSM to utilize our market services.
Responsibilities:
- Greet clients as they enter KSM
- Wearing a mandatory mask and face-shield (gloves optional), go through the COVID questionnaire with each client
- Take each clients temperature using an infrared thermometer
- Record each client’s name and temperature information in the binder provided
- Advise clients that do not pass the COVID screening that they may not enter the premises, and provide alternatives for acquiring their weekly allotment of food
- Direct clients who pass the COVID screening to the appropriate location
- Help manage the flow of clients through the physically distanced line-up, communicating with other volunteers/staff by walkie talkie as needed
- Escalate any issues to KSM staff
Requirements:
- Must be 18+
- Ability to wear a mask and optional gloves/face shield for the duration of time at KSM
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to be firm and consistent in approach to screening
- Friendly disposition
Commitment: Minimum 3 month commitment, one 2 hour shift per week

Bread Bagging Volunteer
Help us package and display fresh, donated bread for pick-up by our clients. Open to volunteers aged 18+.
- Saturdays 7:30 am – 8:30 am
Position: Cobs Bread Delivery Volunteers (Volunteer Pairs required, students welcome)
Supervisor(s): Cobs Volunteer Coordinator
Objective: To transport bread from Cobs Bread (Lakeshore) to Kerr Street Mission in a
timely fashion.
Responsibilities:
- Two people are required at a time to perform this task
- Using your vehicle, arrive at Cobs Bread Lakeshore Road location when the store closes and package up all of the unsold product which Cobs donates to Kerr Street Mission
- Use gloves and bags provided by Cobs to ensure sanitary packaging of the bread products
- Load up your vehicle and deliver the packaged bread to the volunteers/staff at the Kerr Street Mission
Requirements:
- One person in the volunteer pair must be 18+ with a valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle
- Punctuality
- Ability to lift approximately 20 pounds of bread product
- Diligence to complete the job in a thorough and timely manner
- Good problem solving ability
Commitment: One hour per week, or as many days of the week you would like to volunteer.

Christmas Wonders Toy Coordinator
Become a member of our Christmas Wonders team by leading and managing the toy component of the program. Open to volunteers aged 18+.
- August to December, with volunteer hours increasing in December
Position: Christmas Wonders Toy Coordinator
Supervisor(s): Christmas Wonders Lead
Objective: To provide families with the opportunity to select toys for their children and brighten their holiday season.
Responsibilities:
- Attend Christmas Wonders planning meetings and provide input and feedback as to how this years’ program will be run
- Using past data as a guideline, estimate the number of children that will be participating in the Christmas Wonders program
- Co-ordinate toy donations and deliveries with the Oakville Fire and Police Departments to ensure KSM’s needs are met
- Work with KSM staff to arrange toy storage and organization leading up to the toy distribution dates.
- With KSM staff, create a plan for leftover toys (donations or storage)
- Estimate the number of volunteers that will be required leading up to and including the distribution dates and provide this info to KSM’s volunteer coordinator
- Lead a group of volunteers in the set up of the toy distribution area
- Participate and lead groups of volunteers during the toy distribution sessions
- Lead a group of volunteers in the teardown, boxing and storage of leftover toys

At this time we do not have recurring volunteer opportunities available for high school students. If you would like to be placed on a list of volunteers that we reach out to occasionally when we need extra hands, please send an email to volunteer@kerrstreet.com including your name and grade.

Food Bank Thursday Street Ambassador
Seeking high school aged volunteers to act as Street Ambassadors for Food Bank Thursdays, an initiative run by a local realtor. Proceeds will benefit the Kerr Street Mission. The next food drive is December 14 and help is needed leading up to and including this date. Volunteer candidates must reside in the College Park, River Oaks or Glenorchy (north of Dundas) areas of Oakville in order to be eligible for this opportunity.

Student Co-op Program
Kerr Street Mission’s Student Co-op Program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience while making a meaningful impact on their community. Leader In Training Program (LIT)
The KSM Leader In Training program is designed to offer high school students that chance to gain hands-on experience working with kids in our after-school Kids’ Clubs recreational programming and provide opportunities for development through high quality training from professionals.

The Adopt A Shelf program is KSM’s fresh take on food drives! It involves running a focused food drive to stock a specific shelf or shelves in the KSM Market (food bank) for a week or more. With support from KSM, Adopt A Shelf volunteers organize the drives within their neighbourhoods, teams, places of business, churches etc. This is a great opportunity for students, individuals, groups or businesses who are looking to make a difference in a way that is meaningful and very flexible in terms of timing.

Community Meals
Seeking groups of 5-12 volunteers (aged 14+, under 18’s need adult supervision) who are available for:
- Weekly Family Night – Purchase, prepare and serve up to 42 dine-in meals on a Monday evening, and package any leftovers for takeout. Make it fun for families with decoration, themes or kids activities if you can. The kitchen is available from 3:45pm.
Available dates for 2023: Fully booked – check back for cancellations. - Bi-Weekly Adult Activity Social Night – Purchase, prepare and serve up to 42 dine-in meals on a Wednesday evening, and package any leftovers for takeout. Your provision will include running a social activity for our clients (with our help if needed) such as a trivia quiz, bingo or karaoke. The kitchen is available from 3:45 – 8:00 pm.
