A Grateful Family: Olena’s Story

A Family’s Journey from Ukraine to Canada

A family came in recently for their annual client update with Family Services Manager Michelle Lockhart. “When Olena told me the income her husband is now making,” Michelle shared, “I let her know they no longer qualify for our support and she was not at all surprised.”

What followed was a conversation full of warmth, gratitude, and reflection.

Olena expressed deep appreciation for everything KSM has provided since her family arrived from Ukraine. She shared that they were fortunate to have significant savings, which allowed her husband to have his credentials recognized in Canada. Throughout that process, as he studied for exams and worked to get established, KSM supported the family with food and Christmas Wonders.

Feeling Welcomed, Feeling Loved

Olena was overwhelmed by how welcoming Canada has been, and especially grateful to have landed in this community with KSM’s support.

“From the moment we walked in the door at KSM, I felt nothing but love and encouragement from the staff and volunteers. It was like a little piece of home every time I walked through those doors.”

She wanted to express her heartfelt thanks to everyone who ever welcomed her and her family.

Holy Ground

Olena recalled the very first day she registered at KSM, sitting together, holding hands, and both crying as she spoke about what was happening in her home country.

“I knew from that moment that this was a special place and that Jesus was present and this was holy ground.”

Stories like Olena’s remind us why this work matters. To every volunteer, donor, and staff member who has ever opened a door, offered a meal, or simply sat and listened, thank you. You are making a difference that lasts a lifetime.
