Compassion in Action: A Volunteer’s Journey with NCN

When Serving Others Changes You

“Every so often, a conversation reminds me why we do what we do and encourages me to continue on,” said Paula of Kerr Street Mission. “I recently spoke with one of our NCN volunteers and came away deeply encouraged. His story is a powerful reminder of the heart behind our work, that when we show up with love and humility, we often receive more than we give.”

Our volunteers are the heartbeat of NCN, offering their time, talents, and faith to walk alongside others in meaningful ways. Their wisdom, compassion, resources, networks, connections, and willingness to serve bring our mission to life.

From Cheque-Writing to Real Connection

This volunteer, a former businessman, shared how becoming a coach with NCN has transformed his understanding of service.

“I used to write cheques and feel like I was making a difference. But volunteering has shown me a deeper way to live out the call to love our
neighbours.”

For him, it’s not just about practical help, it’s about presence.

“It’s walking alongside people, building relationships, and showing God’s love through everyday acts of kindness.”

A Life Transformed Through Service

His experience with NCN has also led to unexpected personal growth.

“I’ve become more patient, empathetic, and understanding. This has been the most meaningful and rewarding experience of my life.”

Volunteers like him, who live out love in action, and discover along the way that serving others changes us, too, inspire us all here at Kerr Street Mission.
